It is not simply a set of rules of engagement, but an ethical, moral, and spiritual code that defined the life of the samurai\u2014a complete lifestyle that ranged from action on the battlefield to daily conduct. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bushid\u014d proposed that a warrior should be prepared for death, accept his fate, but without losing his humanity, his honor or his dignity. A samurai had to have compassion, humanity, sensitivity. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Respect\/Courtesy (Rei):<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">  respect for others, for hierarchy, for life, for nature. Courtesy, humility, dignity. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Honesty \/ Sincerity (Makoto):<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">  absolute sincerity. To tell the truth, to keep one&#8217;s word. Not lies, not deception; Honesty as a way of life.  <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Honor (Meiyo):<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">  personal reputation, dignity. Honor was sacred: to maintain it, to defend it even in the face of death, rather than to live in dishonor. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Loyalty (Ch\u016bgi):<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">  fidelity to the Lord, to the clan, to duty, to the commitments assumed.
